In what was a very close seven-game series against fellow North American team Counter Logic Gaming, Evil Geniuses edged out a 4-3 victory in the grand finals of the MLG X Games Aspen event. The tournament took place at Aspen, Colorado in the weekend of January 28th-31st, in cooperation with the X Games.
The Evil Geniuses won $15,000 in prize money for scoring first place. To get there, they had to go through high-profile teams such as the aforementioned Counter Logic Gaming, Renegades, Team Allegiance, Team Liquid, and more. Although this was a Halo Championship Series event, the results did not contribute any points or change any placements for the regional finals.
This event marked yet another instance wherein the X Games had a tournament which featured an eSport title. The X Games started hosting eSports events back in 2014, when the Summer X Games Austin event took place. That tournament was won by OpTic Gaming, who defeated Team KaLiBeR in the grand finals.
Similarly, Aspen was home to an MLG X Games event last year, which featured Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as its title. We expect that this one will not be the last time eSports are shown prominently at the X Games. Perhaps this is the first step to getting eSports in the Olympics? Time will tell.
We’re hoping that Halo betting will be available for the Halo World Championships – but that remains to be seen.
